Definity Insurance Company is seeking an experienced lawyer to join its Insurance Operations and Compliance Legal Team. In this role, you will provide legal advice to our insurance business and the compliance function across Canada, with opportunities to:

What can you expect from the role?

  • Advise Definity’s various businesses with respect to federal and provincial laws affecting the property and casualty insurance businesses, including (but not limited to) the areas of insurance (including distribution, market conduct, licensing matters, reinsurance and product development), privacy and data, and marketing, 
  • Craft pragmatic legal-business solutions that permit the business to develop, change and grow their product suite and customer base, while ensuring that all applicable laws are accounted for and adhered to,
  • Assist the insurance business in resolving “business as usual” legal questions that typically arise during their daily operations, and lead and partner with the business on strategic initiatives, 
  • Respond to Regulator inquiries and information requests, either directly or by assisting the business to craft responses,
  • Provide advice to the Company on the implementation of new regulatory requirements,
  • Advise on emerging issues in the insurance industry, such as climate change,
  • Assist the customer dispute resolution office in responding to complex customer issues, including with respect to the Fair Treatment of Customers,
  • Collaborate with Legal colleagues to ensure a consistent approach to the analysis and interpretation of insurance legislation, regulations and applicable industry guidelines,
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of our processes and systems, through, for example, the creation and maintenance of templates and precedents that assist the Department in its work for the Company

What Do You Bring to the Role?

  • A Law Degree from an accredited law school (LLB or Juris Doctor)
  • Experience advising on Québec insurance regulatory matters 
  • Ability to communicate in both English and French
  • Licensed to practice law as a lawyer in Canada 
  • Extensive experience advising businesses, either in-house with a regulated financial institution, in private practice, or with a Canadian financial services regulatory authority
  • Excellent communication skills, including the capacity to communicate with business partners in the way they want to receive advice
  • Adaptable and open to change
  • Outstanding judgment, ability, discretion, and confidence to deal with complex issues, either alone or within a team, and to safeguard confidential information
  • Ability to translate law into meaningful, pragmatic advice in a business context
  • Ability to perform under pressure, meet deadlines and manage multiple, sometimes conflicting priorities
  • Willingness to build strong relationships, and to collaborate with colleagues and business clients
  • Exemplary professionalism and integrity
  • Initiative-taker with a great attitude

Actual salary for the role may vary depending on work location of the successful candidate and other factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, working conditions and the local labour market.  In addition to base pay, eligible employees may participate in various incentive plans which are paid out at the discretion of the company and subject to individual and company performance.
