Mid-market Underwriting, New Graduate Rotational Program (September 2025 Start)
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our Mid-market Underwriting New Graduate Rotational Program. This program is designed for students who are either about to graduate, or who have graduated within the last two years.
Underwriters are responsible for evaluating the acceptability of a customer’s business, using analytical skills to thoroughly understand the business and its risk profile, determining the appropriate coverage and pricing strategy, and negotiating contract terms with the broker. If you’re a solutions-oriented, analytical thinker with strong initiative who is excellent at building relationships, we’d like to hear from you.
The program will provide recent graduates with a comprehensive understanding of commercial underwriting within the insurance industry. As a participant in the program, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop a strong foundation in property & casualty commercial underwriting through a structured rotation across different areas of the business.
The program includes a structured learning plan, plenty of social opportunities to interact and meet others in the field, and access to business leaders who’ll guide and mentor you along the way. Learning through experience, you’ll have the chance to contribute to the growth of our business from the start.
When your program is complete, you'll have advanced business knowledge of the company, new skills and insights, excellent growth opportunities, and are expected to continue your career path by obtaining a role within one of the rotations.
Rotational program length: Two-years - three multi-month placements within Mid-market processing and underwriting.
Rotation business areas: Auto and Property Processing, Small & Medium Enterprise Underwriting, Mid-market Underwriting
What can you expect in this role?
Underwriting Processing:
- In your rotation as an Underwriting Assistant, begin to understand underwriting processes and familiarize yourself with guidelines, workflows, and systems in order to support completion of a variety of tasks
- Meet quality and production expectations on a regular basis
- Work closely with Underwriters and Technical Processing teams, ensuring work is accurately and fully completed
Small & Medium Enterprise (SME) Underwriting:
- In your rotation as an SME Underwriter, you’ll assess risks and accept, decline, or amend new business submissions, policy endorsements, renewals, etc.
- Leverage tools, resources and reports to appropriately evaluate risks and make effective Underwriting decisions
- Apply underwriting judgment to process moderately complex risks effectively in accordance with Definity’s corporate policies, underwriting guidelines, standard operating procedures, and Line of Business and segmentation strategies
- Begin to build broker relationships through contacting brokers where required, requesting additional information, communicating risk acceptances and terms, declines as well as quote follow ups (where applicable) to achieve target hit ratios – provide exceptional service to brokers for all interactions, and seek to add value in every broker interaction
Mid-market Underwriting:
- In your Mid-market Underwriting rotation, you’ll work on increasingly complex business and gain exposure to renewal and new business transactions
- Build strong broker partnerships and hone your sales and negotiation skills to meet your individual and regional targets; negotiate terms and conditions of risk acceptance with brokers in writing, by telephone, email, or in-person
- Work collaboratively with peers in Mid-market Auto, Small Business, Risk Services, and Claims
- Apply sound underwriting judgement by understanding risk characteristics and effectively applying underwriting judgment while working within your designated authority level
- Effectively manage competing priorities within the context of our Commercial strategy to meet business objectives

- Commitment to obtain your Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation
