The Senior Data Specialist is an innovative and experienced data professional with expertise in collection, processing, and transformation of data used for modelling, analysis, and reporting purposes.

Reporting to the Director, Special Projects, the Senior Data Specialist will be an integral part of an innovative, project-based team that translates business needs and opportunities into automated solutions. With a mix of data science and actuarial expertise, the Special Projects team supports all Corporate Actuarial teams comprising Reserving, Planning, Capital Modelling, and Strategic Risk. 

To thrive in this role, the Senior Data Specialist requires expert-level skills in SQL, Python, process automation, and cloud platforms. Experience with modern insurance processes, data visualization, Google Cloud Platform including Vertex AI, and predictive modelling in a P&C insurance context are also strong assets in this role.

What you can expect in this role?

  • Support the end-to-end design and implementation of new processes for Corporate Actuarial teams
  • Aggregate data from multiple sources with a focus on quality controls and automation
  • Take ownership of existing data pipelines, improving and modifying them as needed
  • Transform datasets to suit modelling, reporting, and analysis requirements
  • Develop a deep understanding of Definity’s data assets and recommend solutions to new and complex problems 
  • Build/perform validation and due diligence checks to assess data integrity
  • Create and evaluate predictive models in support of corporate actuarial functions

What do you bring to the role?

  • University degree in a quantitative field (e.g. Actuarial Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance/Business)
  • Experience with data visualization
  • Understanding of statistical methods
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • 3-5 years of Python, SAS, and/or R programming experience
  • 3-5 years of SQL experience
  • Experience with creation and evaluation of predictive models in a P&C insurance context is an asset
