What can you expect in this role?

Reporting to the Manager, Technical Underwriting, The Ontario Regional Technical Specialist is responsible for providing Technical Underwriting for Commercial Property and Casualty to the Regional UW team, the SME team, and the Regional Processing team. 

The successful candidate for this role works with the leadership team to provide underwriting approvals to ensure profitability initiatives are followed. Provide timely and adequate training and development of underwriting staff, provide guidance, on-the-job training, technical instructions, and leadership support to staff relative to onboarding new hires, performance, productivity, and adherence to processes and Corporate Policy and Procedures. 

  • Advise on technical underwriting questions to underwriters maintaining service level agreements.
  • Reviews and interpret policy wordings when appropriate on referrals received. 
  • Provide training and mentoring to the commercial departments, using available resources and assist with the development of training material.
  • Review the technical file review findings and help identify trends, training gaps and best practices.  Coordinate with leadership, the underwriting actions required to ensure outcome of actions taken improve the underwriting quality and profitability.
  • Foster a positive working relationship with Head Office, other Regional offices, and departments.
  • Lead and/or participate in file reviews for quality assurance purposes.
  • Assist the leadership team as required, providing appropriate documentation/reports to help identify and quantify potential trends, both positive and adverse.  Assist with the development of action plans to support Financial Goals, productivity, and profitability.
  • Champion the development and implementation of business change.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What do you bring to the role?

  • University degree in any discipline or a 2-year diploma from a publicly recognized and funded college or a completed CIP designation
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Commercial Lines Property/Casualty underwriting
  • Excellent ability to multi-task and monitor progress to meet deadlines
  • Prior experience in developing and providing training in underwriting complex property & liability risks
  • Strong analytical skills: able to quickly interpret data, information, reports and come to a decision quickly
  • Strong customer service, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong computer literacy skills
  • Ability to influence and effectively negotiate with stakeholders
